Why Are the School's Colors Red and Gold?

St. Joseph School was established in 1869 and at that time its school colors were red and white.

In 1883, because the population of the school was steadily growing, a separate school for boys was established - St.Mary's. Their school colors were green and gold.

In 1949, the current St. Joseph School opened its doors. It was decided, at that time, to combine school colors from both St. Joseph's and St. Mary's, so our school colors became red and gold.

Red is symbolic of passion and blood. The Cardinals wear red as a symbol of their devotion to the Church and the Pope. It is to show their blood, which they would shed for Christ and the Church.

Gold represents the love of God which is the most precious. From the Old Testament, we see gold utilized to show the high rank of kings and royalty. Gold is a color that is associated with St. Joseph specifically as he was of the House of David.
