6th Grade Adventure to Kīlauea & Kilauea Military Camp

February 18, 2026

Our 6th graders recently returned from an unforgettable three-day trip to Volcano, where they stayed at KMC (Kilauea Military Camp) and explored the wonders of Kīlauea! From the moment they arrived, students were filled with excitement and curiosity as they stepped onto one of the world’s most famous active volcanoes.

During their visit, students had the incredible opportunity to explore the volcano’s craters, observing firsthand the powerful forces that shape our islands. Standing at the edge of these massive formations gave them a new appreciation for the natural beauty and strength of Hawaiʻi’s landscape.

Beyond the science, students also learned about the deep cultural significance of volcanoes in Hawaiʻi. They discovered how Kīlauea is respected as the home of Pele, the goddess of fire, and how Native Hawaiian traditions honor and care for the land. These lessons helped students understand that volcanoes are not only geological wonders but also sacred and meaningful places in Hawaiian culture.

In addition to learning about how volcanoes form and the different stages of a volcano’s lifespan, students strengthened their bonds with one another. Whether they were hiking together, sharing meals, or talking story in the evenings, this trip created lasting memories and deeper friendships. They even had the opportunity to enjoy the newly renovated bowling lanes at KMC Cafe.

A heartfelt mahalo to the parents of our 6th graders for contributing to the success of this special experience and helping make it one for the memory books. Your support made this adventure possible!

A very special mahalo to Mrs. Okabayashi and Mr. Nahoopii for chaperoning, coordinating, and ensuring everything ran smoothly. Your dedication and care helped make this trip both educational and meaningful for our students.

What an amazing journey of learning, culture, friendship, and adventure!
